New hope for Illinois' mentally ill nursing-home residents

Thousands of psychiatric patients are likely to move out of nursing homes and into community-based settings in the next five years under a landmark legal agreement designed to reshape Illinois' troubled long-term care system.

The agreement, expected to be filed Monday in federal court in Chicago, lays out a schedule for state officials to offer approximately 4,500 mentally ill nursing home residents the choice to move out of two dozen large facilities known as "institutions for mental diseases" and into smaller settings that experts say are more appropriate and less expensive.

"This is a momentous day for people with disabilities in Illinois," said Benjamin Wolf, associate legal director for the ACLU of Illinois, which filed a lawsuit in 2005 that led to the agreement. "It is the beginning of transforming a system that has been focused on institutionalizing people for decades into one that actually delivers what people want and need."

More than any other state, I...

O'Hare to begin full-body scans Monday

Pat-down or body scan? Travelers, it's now your call.

A new security tool that scrutinizes an individual's entire body for hidden weapons and explosives will begin screening passengers Monday at O'Hare International Airport, according to federal officials. Transportation Security Administration officers can conduct a scan in as little as 5 seconds without laying a hand on passengers as they pass through airport security checkpoints on the way to board planes.

Your Getting Around reporter experienced the screening process on Friday at checkpoint No. 1 in the United Airlines terminal.

Although some travelers may never accept the idea of an X-ray peeking underneath their clothes in exchange for the ability to travel, my impression was that the process is free of embarrassment.

Modern Warfare 2 Map Pack Also Features Ridiculous Price [Call Of Duty]

Capping off a fairly terrible fortnight of news surrounding Call of Duty developers Infinity Ward comes word this morning that Modern Warfare 2's map pack is one of the most over-priced pieces of downloadable content we've ever seen.

Popping onto Xbox Live spokesman Larry Hryb's podcast to promote Modern Warfare 2's upcoming "Stimulus Package" map pack (which is launching first on Microsoft's console), Infinity Ward's Robert bowling revealed that the five maps - two of which are old maps being re-released for this game - will cost 1200 Microsoft Points.

Or, $15.

For five multiplayer maps.

Fifteen. Dollars. Or, if you're so inclined, £10, €14, or AUD$19.

Hoo boy.

Garner, of the 1000 block of Westmoreland Avenue in Waukegan, was charged with attempte...
